The people who lift large samples are the leaders of a band that contains every musician from the last 40 years.

The people who try to make original or sample free music are basically just working with whatever DAW they can afford and that's it. They judge music based on the feelings it gives them, and when that's the only thing people are going off of, heavily sampled music is at a huge advantage. The majority of vaporwave listeners aren't keeping any of these things in mind. Now I know what you're saying: But Uncle, this genre is about rebelling against the idea of ownership! Can't the samplers and the non-samplers just get along? That's how you end up with things like PZA and the 2047/Solar Fields debacle. I know we'd all like to trust that everything's going alright, but people will take advantage of that.
Now there are a lot of artists that have moved into an uncomfortable middle ground, and no one wants to question whether what they're doing is or should be okay. Good VW albums leave no question as to what was sampled. People don't know what good sampling looks like, and they don't seem to care anymore. What people really want is to listen to the music that gives them the warm and fuzzies guilt free. I've been sharing samples for a while now, and nobody's cared, and I've seen others get a similar response. There's been a lot of talk about Vaporwave being more transparent, but really that's not what people want. A lot of us would have to acknowledge that the things we like (and in some cases make) aren't quite as great as we made them out to be. Nobody seems to really want to go in depth about it and it's pretty obvious why.
